Description
Near Cherokee, North Carolina, USA., this is Mingo Falls, a 160 foot tall waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains, not far from the souther terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This waterfall is very dependent on rainfall, and it can present just a trickle, as seen here, or it can be a roaring cascade (you’ll have to look elsewhere for that view!).
This is a popular tourist spot, and the view here is captured from the deck of a wooden bridge over the creek at the foot of the falls. Thanks to the very wide angle lens I used to capture this, you are able to see everything that is visible when looking towards the falls. Even though the falls were flowing with less volume that after a heavy rain, the sound and mist through the deep woods was still impressive, and this apparently had no impact on the busses of students and tourists coming through. As a long-exposure image, I had to patiently await the departure of streams of people… who also frequently climbed down off the path and up the falls, standing there for several minutes at a time taking cell phone selfies! (It was actually really annoying, because they were not supposed to be doing this… it damages the fragile mosses and ferns, and is dangerous). This is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Appalachians, this park is managed by the Cherokee Indian Reservation.
Captured on ILFORD Delta 3200 PRO Black and White 120 roll film as a 2.25×3.25″ negative using a 1961 Graflex Century Graphic folder camera fitted with a Schneider Super Angulon 47mm wide angle lens with the table down, rotated on its side. The settings were: 3200ASA, f/11, 1/160s. I chose the 3200ASA high speed film not so much because of the low lighting in the deep woods, but rather because the platform had a tendency to vibrate when walked upon, and this allowed a reasonably deep depth of field at a higher shutter speed. I also shot this with other films, and will post some of those shortly.
