Description
This is a historic landmark representative of the Mediterranean style of architecture that defines Coral Gables, Florida. This was built as a hotel, but during World War II it became a military/veterans hospital where my mother worked as a candystriper assisting nurses. In my childhood, while this building was mostly closed and abandoned in disarray, my high school briefly used the property for special events. My graduation party from High School was here as was my college graduation luncheon. It was one of the first places I took my wife for brunch when it reopened as a hotel in the late 80's before we married. I had the latest honor of attending a luncheon with the Dalai Llama here, and have attended several chamber of commerce meetings here under previous ownership.
This is an older image that I reworked with Photomatix as an HDR, and is an early example of an HDR when the tools were less sophisticated than today.
I am no longer offering this image for sale via FineArtAmerica because the current owners of the hotel have asked that I not offer images of the property for sale. Considering this image was captured from a public road a block away, this request perplexes me. But I certainly can't afford to legally defend my rights on this issue, so I've both removed the image from sale and renamed the image to not indicate that this is the Biltmore, a name it's had through many owners. If any other photographers want to comment on my rights as a photographer and their ability as new owners of an historic icon landmark to silence my creative efforts, I'd be most interested in your words.
