Artist's Description

The Pueblo Indians call it POsoge, or Big River. This is the Rio Grande Rift as seen from the west-rim Dead Cholla mountain climbing trail maintained by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This side and below are managed by the park service, the far side is part of Pueblo Indian lands. The nearest town is Taos, NM (the power lines you see in the distance lead East towards Taos). Beyond Taos are the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, here shrouded in blue haze from summertime forest fires in distant Los Alamos (70 miles away to the west). As you can tell from the smooth river rocks up where Im taking this picture from, the river used to run through this area before the rift opened up. Then it found its new home 600-1000 feet below (at this point its over 800 ft). In the foreground you can see a mixture of ancient sandstone and a cap of solid lava. Its a fascinating landscape!

About William Wetmore

William Wetmore

I sincerely hope you find beauty and relevance in my images. For me, photography is a spiritual pursuit, almost a meditative practice, through which I appreciate the beauty of the world and share that appreciation with you. If you buy my artwork, please drop me an email to let me know what you liked about the image you chose! When I'm behind the camera, I seek out unusual subjects, new perspectives, and strive to capture the mood and totality of those subjects the way I see them. From minute details to wide vistas, each composition is considered and contemplated. I'm always looking for new ideas, and would be thrilled if you suggest topics of interest for me to attempt to capture. And, if you see something in here that you like, but...
